Hello and welcome to the second installment of Hey Book Club. Thanks for tuning in! Currently I am reading (listening to for all you real reading purists) The Final Girls Support Group. Now I haven't finished it so I'm not reviewing this, but I want to point out a detail in the book that I noticed. So, in the book each of the "Final Girls" has a movie made about her. Each movie is very similar to a current famous slasher, as of now I have noted a Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and possibly a Sleep Away Camp one (IDK any movies that the campers get killed at camp besides that). I mention this because he (the author) mentions the Stab movies. The Stab movies is the movie franchise in the Scream series, its the movies made about the events of the first Scream film and then their subsequent sequels. I mention THIS because it means that the events of scream are cannon in The Final Girls Support Group, and I find that fun!

Not Just Romance But Also Comedy

There are many, many articles stating that romcoms are dead. I read one article that claimed Avatar (the one with the blue people, not the animated show) lead to the death of the romcom. I also read the same article that said Netflix has brought it back with The Kissing Booth of all movies. Now I liked To All The Boys I Loved Before as much as anyone, but The Kissing Booth sucked ass and so did After and we all know it.

Anyway here are some movies I've seen recently that I liked that fall under the RomCom bubble.

ree

Honor Society: That's right a romantic comedy with Dustin from Stranger Things! I love Gaten, he's great and YES he does belt out an Alicia Keys' song in the middle of this movie and he KILLED IT. But more important than Gaten, Angourie Rice. She is spectacular, I have loved her since The Nice Guys (2016) which if you haven't seen, watch it now. I wouldn't say this film is award winning but its nice, and way way more than just a romcom. Also its so gay and funny.

I highly recommend. This is on paramount plus but you can find it on 123 movies if your heart desires.

The Broken Hearts Gallery: Now I may just be a little in love Dacre Montgomery but this movie is so good! This is about a woman in her mid twenties that holds on to things that remind her of her exes. Long story short she starts curating a gallery of keepsakes from breakups, and she may or may not fall in love along the way. Geraldine Viswanathan is so funny, and she's great. Her character is fun and quirky and she is a relatable character. Her friend group is realistic and sweet, and includes the lovely Phillipa Soo from Hamilton and Molly Gordon from Booksmart. It's a good film and I like it, makes me happy.

I recommend. I do not know where you can find this but as before 123 movies provides.

Here are some more that I have less to say about but I enjoy

The Duff

Did it set fat girls behind for a decade. Yes, they love being described as the unlovable dumb ugly fat friend. And then being played by a girl who is a size 8 at most. But... I do love it when the boy likes the girl and they kiss. Ya know.

The Half Of It

I wouldn't say this is a RomCom but its a movie with romance and comedy. The ultimate Lesbian and her Himbo movie. Its really good too.

Set It Up

Basic little romcom but its got Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu, and Meredith Hagner and I'm a little in love with all of them. Downside Pete Davidson.

The Lovebirds

Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae accidently kill a guy. Its funny and its got action.

I Love It When A Movie Makes Me Feel Smart

Confessing my undying love to Aaron Sorkin AKA films with lots of dialogue about things that might have happened

These are movies and shows that make me feel smart when I watch them and are also really good dramas (and normally have comedy.)

The Social Network

"Sorry! My Prada's at the cleaners! Along with my hoodie and my 'fuck you' flip-flops, you pretentious douchebag!" A amazing collab of David Fincher's directing and Aaron Sorkin's writing to make one of my favorite films.

For people who can't read context clues its about the creation of Facebook and how he f*cked over people in the process.

Molly's Game

Written and directed by my love Aaron Sorkin. This movie is so long but its about a woman, Molly Bloom who ran poker games with rich people. And then the FBI came in an sh*t got rocked. It's good and keeps you watching. Michael Cera is in this as a very important poker player known as Mr. X and I heard a rumor that Mr. X was Toby Maguire in real life.

I'm watching this as I type and Joe Keery is in this for a couple lines.

Based on real stuff. Starring Jessica Chastain. Its on Netflix.

I, Tonya

Directed by Craig Gillespie, who is very good at directing. Starring Margot Robbie and Sebastian Stan. Tells the story of Tonya Harding, a Olympic figure skater who was banned from skating because of an incident that lead to the injury of Nancy Kerrigan. The soundtrack to this is amazing and the movie is so entertaining, funny, and makes you feel for Tonya.

Based on a real story. Available to watch on Hulu.

Bombshell

This is about the Fox News producer Roger Ailes who sexually harassed and assaulted the woman employees at Fox. Tells the real stories of Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson. As well as the fictionalized story of Margot Robbie's character. It's a really good movie. My conservative grandparents hate it so you know its good.

Available to watch on Prime Video

The Trial Of The Chicago 7

Aaron Sorkin again baby! This one is about the Chicago 7 plus Bobby Seale of the Black Panthers. A real star studded cast, we got Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Michael Keaton. The editing is something that is so important to me. The riot scene, amazing!

Based on the real events. Available on Netflix

The Newsroom

This show is like my baby. It's my favorite show. Created by Aaron Sorkin, follows the newsroom antics of a well known nightly news channel (think NBC or CNN.) Takes place through out 2010-2014. Three seasons of amazing television. The first episode is the BP Oil Spill.

This newsroom is not real but they news they cover is. Available on HBO Max (as of now because who knows WTF is going on with that)

The Theatre

Quick reviews of things I saw in the movie theatre.

Elvis

It was all editing. I think I had a stroke, plus an old lady took my seat which lead to a domino effect of seat issues that didn't become an issue until after the movie started. If anything this movie was a Tom Parker hate film. It was fine. I have a free movie pass now.

Top Gun

The popcorn machine caught on fire as soon as the movie started. So I did miss the beginning. And I have not seen the original Top Gun (that's my bad, sorry.) My review: a little less baby (Tom Cruise) a little more boss (the new pilots.) I actually couldn't care less about Tom Cruise's romance with that woman and sadness about his dead friend from 40 years ago. But the pilots were HOT! Also now I have 3 free movie passes now.

Bullet Train

OMG I loved this movie. Brad Pitt is hilarious. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is so so so hot. Logan Lerman (tho dead for a majority of the film) sexier than ever. It was a funny action film and I think its a great watch and I will watch again.
