Long time no see. I am not a booktoker, but some of those ladies need some help... and that one guy needs a shirt that covers his nipples. Now, if you are on the side of booktok (that's book tik tok) then you know how god-awful some of their book recs are... and a lot of them are dark fairy "romance" or just tropes... no plot... just tropes. And neither of those makes a good book. Anyway, I've been reading books that aren't fairy p*rn or hockey romance about real hockey players. (I'm looking at you Anna Zabo and L.A. Witt.)

On a positive note Esquire's list of "The Best Books of 2023 (So Far)" included no books with UGLY, DISGUSTING vector art images. I'm talking about books that look like the above, it was an epidemic. Not to be a romance novel hater but these covers alone are the biggest turnoff. That being said there must be a reason for it, learn more here.

Books I've Read Recently

Lets get into it.

Rabbits by Terry Miles→ Oh Terry Miles, Nick Silvers's cousin lol. (That's a joke, listen to a Minnow Beats Whales podcast to understand.) I liked this book, K was an icon. The beginning was really good and then it went off the rails. I think it is really important to listen to the Rabbits podcast first to even understand what's going on.

Some of the lines were funny, K is a lesbian icon, and I think the ending is better if you believe it is a rich organization and not a multidimensional thing.

Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart → A short little thriller. Got a splash of murder and a little manipulation. We support women's rights but more importantly, we support women's wrongs. RIP Imogen tho, she seemed nice.

This a good palette cleanser book. Real basic, nothing deep, keeps ya listening.

They're Watching You by Chelsea Ichaso → F*cking Remington.... she didn't end up with smart slacker boy Gavin and I'm still angry. This book was not good but it kept me interested enough to finish it in 2 days so... some things going on. It's got the zest of an "I'm not like other girls" story and the convoluted plot of a prep school mystery. So long story short, I was entertained.

Make this a movie, I dare you!

Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle → If you wanna book that outright tells you religion is kinda bogus and people use religious rhetoric for their own hateful needs. Then this is the book for you, except they say it in a way that is still kinda pro-religion (which I am not. Basically, this girl is gay but she's religious, and she's like good thing I'm not gay... but sometimes I think about kissing girls, but I'm not gay. And then she finds out she is gay. Also demons.

This was poorly written too and written in first person. Look at that cover though.

Pines by Blake Crouch → It was interesting and well-written. We love a little detective in Small-Town America. Did pull a Maze Runner in the end if ya know what I mean. 😉 This is part of the Wayward Pines Trilogy and it's the first of OUR OFFICAL BOOK CLUB BOOKS!

It is also a TV show that I saw a few episodes of a few years ago and I remember it being good.

This is very exciting, don't leave me hanging.

The Craft: Get ready for spooky season with this totally 90's witch movie. It fit after fit with this one. Highly recommend and it's got 2 of the main characters from Scream.

ree

ParaNorman: It's not just a kid's movie. The artistic craft and amazing writing that went into this film. Fantastic. Anyway, watch this because it's fantastic and funny.
